My goal was to create an audio record of my time here - time spent discovering new places, with new friends, and being a tourist.
Our Dutch friends Will and Gert were visiting so I grabbed the opportunity to become a tourist and see the sights again, before Dunedin became just another distant memory.
Many hours of samples were recorded then painstakingly edited down to create a usable Found Sound sample library. Sequencing was done in Ableton Live 7 with the aid of a Korg PadKontrol, then the set was optimised for live performance and mixed live using two Faderfoxes for hands-on control.
This mix was first aired at the Apropos of Nothing release gig and was the usual blur of sleep deprivation, loud beats and extreme bass. The downloadable version available here was mixed live from the relative calm of my King Edward Court studio, a couple of months later.

"Stop Pertie, stop!" A mother tries to keep her kids in check in the Botanic Garden; I muck about with the recorder in one of my midnight ideas sessions; Mike, Ange and Kate make funny noises; and a young boy learns the hard way that fingers shouldn't be poked into cages containing hungry birds.

A loud drive-by by the Taieri Gorge tourist train, plus clackety-clack breaks and a musical horn; Gert calling out to Will in the Octagon; Lola gives her vocal approval; and Tom gives us a tour of the Green Man brewery.

"It's Gong" - or should that be 'gone'? The fabled aviary 'gong' birds refuse to make an appearance for the mic and I, so I'm forced to make this strange lament for the gong that wasn't.

Getting deep with 6000 volts; experimental pans in bed; back on the TGR in a creaky carriage, with Gert pondering the lack of anything in historic Central Otago; a squeaky gate marks the end of an afternoon at Sandfly Bay; aviary birds pose as ominous howls from the industrial badlands; and the birds wake up at Glenross Street.

South Island commerce in action: young checkout operators scan goods at one of our regular visits to Centre City New World, and an EFTPOS machine beeps at the Untouched World sale; then we're in the car on the way to somewhere; doors are closing and swinging open at the entrance to the Meridian men's room; we're crossing with the green man in the Octagon; the aviary birds rave it up; and Biddy-bid the cat is crunching beats.

Deep bird bass; the daily trip to the letterbox breaks the monotony of working-from-home in the Brockville 'burbs; staff hard at work in an upmarket Princes St cafe; noises from the Sisley's kitchen; and seagulls eye up our Port Chalmers picnic while Lola and Mike discuss the mic.
