On Saturday night the While_you_were_Sleeping crew took over Room 101 @ Bar Bodega for a night of live local electronica, featuring Pang, Anaesthesia Associates, and myself, with DJ support from DJ Mayhem of Active fame, and visuals from VJs Mr J and Yeti.
It was a really enjoyable evening, with the lights turned down low and everybody's gear glowing like it was already Christmas :). The two video screens and sprawling technical set-ups of the performers gave Room 101 a cosy feel, with the audience chilling out on comfy sofas and at the bar, reminiscent of a ship's galley.
The audio ranged from the cutting-edge minimal German house of DJ Mayhem, to Pang's outings into the world of deep ambience, the upbeat Ninja-tunes styles of A/V outfit Anaesthesia Associates, and the downbeat selections of yours-truly.
I played a little after midnight and managed to stay awake for a full 70 minute set despite only achieving 15 hours of sleep the week before. Will I ever learn not to leave these things until the last minute? Hopefully, but I'm seriously doubtful..
This mix contains some old favourites remixed (Anti-Glare & Elemental), some new stuff composed last year (Innersphere remix, Wake Up), some even older stuff (B is for Butterfly) and some material cannibalised from my recent Munt FM live set (While_you_were_Sleeping 3 Mash-up).
The mixing's a bit off because, like me, my computer is getting on a bit, and, I'd only had 15 hours sleep that week...
Nonetheless, I humbly present to you my first While_you_were_Sleeping live mix of 2006, for your listening pleasure. This is the unedited live mix, save for the removal of four 'cringe-factor' moments - two misplaced delays and two mistriggered samples, otherwise complete with stuff-ups and incompetencies. Enjoy...

- Anti-Glare (Emoticons)

A slow build up of tambourines morphs into snappy breakbeats accompanying padded layers, bells and bass stabs - the perfect accompaniment to a New Year's sunrise.

- While you were Sleeping 3 (Cabin Pressure Mash-up)

The curtains of first class air travel are pulled back to reveal some shady characters. Meanwhile we wait for the phone to be answered, while an undulating bassline and crashing waves are eventually joined by layered breaks, looping pads, static washes and calls to 'Bring It'.

- Whiteout (Reconstructed

An accidental deletion leads to a 2006 reconstruction, a computer tells right from wrong, and Captain and Commander tell us to 'Stand By'.. & wait for a sub-space attack of deep bass, and lush pads.

- Innersphere (Rippling Remix)
- 0:10:31
-
Call and response percussion builds up to be joined by a contemplative organ, a deep ringing pad, dreamy bass, rippling vocals and a choir of children.
- 5
-
- Elemental (Bay 6)
- 0:10:31
-
Quirky & basscious kick & hat-driven remix of this Cuba Street classic, which jumps all over the place, and seems to be a very different beast altogether from the original.

- Wake Up (Ambient)
- 0:11:10
-
Pitched ambient bass and scraping distant beats break down to an electronic detox of spacious pads and playful frequency sweeps, which eventually give way to sucking beats and a confident bassline.

- B is for Butterfly (Insomnia Mix)
- 0:07:20
-
A slight pause indicates the end of the set, then a lazy beat gets things 'moving' again. A woman spells out a phrase about butterflies, while beats fall over each other. Finally some pads, a simple bassline, and Elemental's hats roll in to make sense of the downbeat chaos.

- Elemental (Microelectronics Plays Silicon)
- 0:05:38
-
Varied flute and vocal snippets, re-ordered bass stabs, and pitched pads all contribute to the playful vibe of this remix.
