Now I'm sure I was overreacting, but just look at the stats - "the possibility of dying unexpectedly during anaesthesia if your age is less than 60 years and you are fit and well is about 1 chance per 200,000 anaesthetics given" (NZSA brochure).
My odds were of course much higher, because I am a Smith, and there are numerous cases of sh*t befalling Smiths that simply doesn't affect other people (this is known as Smith's Law).
